Palmer’s career spanned 10 seasons (1978–1989), primarily with the Montreal Expos.
On April 21, 1984, Palmer pitched a five-inning perfect game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Because the game was called due to rain, it is technically considered a “perfect game” in the box score but is not officially recognized in MLB’s record books because it didn’t last nine innings.
At just 21 years old, Palmer had a spectacular rookie-level season for Montreal, going 10–2 with a 2.64 ERA. He won eight consecutive decisions at one point, helping keep the Expos in a tight pennant race.
After years of elbow and shoulder issues in Montreal, he moved to the Atlanta Braves in 1986. He stayed healthy enough to throw a career-high 209.2 innings that year, posting 11 wins and 170 strikeouts.
Palmer ended his career in 1989 with the Detroit Tigers. While he never reached “superstar” status, he was widely respected as a pitcher who, when healthy, could shut down any lineup in the National League.
