Caudill’s career spanned nine seasons (1979–1987), playing for the Cubs, Yankees, Mariners, Athletics, and Blue Jays.
The years from (1982–1984) are considered Caudill’s peak years. During these three seasons with the Mariners and Athletics, he established himself as a premier closer. He averaged nearly 30 saves per season with an impressive strikeout rate. His best year came in 1984 with the Oakland Athletics, where he posted a 2.71 ERA and 36 saves, earning him his only All-Star selection and a 7th-place finish in the AL Cy Young voting.
Following his success in Oakland, he signed a massive (for the time) five-year, $7 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1985. However, his performance began to decline shortly after, and he never quite regained his “Inspector” form.
Despite a sharp decline toward the end of his career, Caudill remains a memorable figure for his eccentric personality and his role in the evolution of the modern “fireman” relief pitcher.
