Quisenberry’s career spanned 12 seasons (1979–1990), almost entirely with the Kansas City Royals.
Lacking a high-velocity fastball, Quisenberry adopted a submarine delivery in 1980. He threw nearly underhand, releasing the ball just inches off the grass. This created a “heavy” sinker that resulted in a relentless stream of ground balls. He led the American League in saves five times in six years (1980, 1982–1985). In 1983, he set a then-MLB record with 45 saves.
Quisenberry was a vital part of the Royals’ 1980 and 1985 World Series runs. He was the winning pitcher in the legendary Game 6 of the 1985 World Series (the “Don Denkinger” game).
Tragically, Dan Quisenberry passed away from brain cancer in 1998 at the age of 45. He was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame that same year. He remains a symbol of an era where relievers were “firemen” who entered games in the 7th or 8th inning and finished them out with guile and grit rather than raw power.
