Dickie Thon had a 15-season Major League Baseball career, playing for six different teams: the California Angels (1979-1980), Houston Astros (1981-1987), San Diego Padres (1988), Philadelphia Phillies (1989-1991), Texas Rangers (1992), and Milwaukee Brewers (1993).

Over his career, he accumulated 1,176 hits, 71 home runs, 435 RBIs, and 167 stolen bases, with a career batting average of .264. He won one Silver Slugger award and was an All-Star.

A significant event in Thon’s career occurred on April 8, 1984, when he was hit in the left eye by a pitch from Mike Torrez, causing a fractured orbital bone and permanent partial blindness due to scar tissue behind his retina. This injury significantly impacted his potential, as many believed he was on a Hall of Fame trajectory before the incident. Despite the vision issues and challenges with depth perception, Thon remarkably managed to play for ten more years in the major leagues.

Dickie Thon made his MLB debut on May 22, 1979, with the California Angels at the age of 20. In his first two seasons with the Angels (1979-1980), he played in 35 and 80 games respectively, batting .339 in 1979 (though in limited at-bats) and .255 in 1980.

This 1980 Topps #663 card is considered one of his rookie cards, and it also features other “Angels Future Stars” Bob Clark and Ralph Botting.
