Ron Hassey is a former Major League Baseball catcher with a career spanning 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991.
Hassey holds the unique record of being the only catcher in MLB history to catch two perfect games. This incredible feat occurred with two different pitchers and ten years apart: May 15, 1981, catching Len Barker for the Cleveland Indians. Then July 28, 1991, catching Dennis Martinez for the Montreal Expos. He was a member of the Oakland Athletics team that won the World Series in 1989.
Hassey played for several teams throughout his career, including the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, and Montreal Expos.
Ron Hassey’s most recognized rookie card is this 1980 Topps #222. Like other cards from the 1980 Topps set, its value is modest compared to the Rickey Henderson rookie, but it’s a key card for collectors looking to complete the set or for fans of Hassey’s unique place in baseball history.
