Chappas played parts of three seasons (1978–1980), all with the Chicago White Sox.
Listed at 5’3″ (though he later claimed he was closer to 5’5″), Chappas was marketed by Bill Veeck as the smallest player in the game. Veeck, never one to miss a publicity stunt, had legendary broadcaster Harry Caray “officially” measure Chappas on the field to drum up excitement.
Before his 1979 rookie season, Chappas was a national sensation, even appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He entered spring training as a long shot but famously beat out veteran player-manager Don Kessinger for the starting shortstop job on Opening Day.
Chappas was a switch-hitter with excellent speed and a reliable glove. While he struggled to maintain a high batting average against big-league pitching, his presence in the lineup during the “South Side Hitmen” era made him a fan favorite at Comiskey Park.
Harry Chappas passed away in September 2024 at the age of 66. He remains a beloved figure in White Sox lore for representing the era of colorful characters and “David vs. Goliath” energy on the field.
