Curtis debuted in 1992 with the California Angels after being an unheralded 45th-round draft pick. He quickly established himself as a “spark plug” type of player, combining decent power with high-end speed.
Over his decade in the big leagues, he played for six different teams: California Angels (1992–1994), Detroit Tigers (1995–1996), Los Angeles Dodgers (1996), Cleveland Indians (1997), New York Yankees (1997–1999) and Texas Rangers (2000–2001).
The peak of his career occurred in New York, where he was a key bench piece and occasional starter for the 1998 and 1999 World Series Champion teams. His most iconic moment came in Game 3 of the 1999 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. Curtis hit two home runs in that game, including a dramatic walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Yankees a 6-5 win.
After his retirement in 2001, his legacy was unfortunately overshadowed by significant legal issues in 2013 related to his time as a volunteer coach, which led to a prison sentence.
