Anthony “Nomar” Garciaparra is a former professional baseball shortstop who played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is best known for his time with the Boston Red Sox, where he was a superstar and fan favorite during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Garciaparra was a highly touted prospect drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 1994 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut in 1996 and quickly became one of the most exciting players in the game. In his first full season in 1997, he won the American League Rookie of the Year award.
From 1997 to 2000, Garciaparra was a dominant force, consistently ranking among the best players in baseball. He won back-to-back American League batting titles in 1999 (.357) and 2000 (.372).
After his initial superstar run, Garciaparra’s career was plagued by a series of injuries, beginning with a wrist injury in 2001 that caused him to miss most of the season. On July 31, 2004, in a shocking move that was a part of a four-team trade, the Red Sox traded Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs.
Garciaparra’s time with the Cubs was brief and also hampered by injuries. He later signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he had a resurgence in 2006, winning the National League Comeback Player of the Year award. He finished his career with the Oakland Athletics in 2009.
