Elroy Leon “Roy” Face was one of Major League Baseball’s pioneer relief specialists, virtually redefining the modern bullpen role during his 16-season tenure with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Standing just 5’8″, Face relied on a devastating, tumbling forkball that baffled hitters throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Historic 1959 Season: Finished with an astonishing 18–1 record, setting the MLB single-season winning percentage record (.947) that still stands today.
World Series Champion (1960): Played a pivotal role in Pittsburgh’s 1960 World Championship, earning saves in Games 1, 4, and 5.
6-Time All-Star: Selected to three consecutive All-Star teams from 1959 to 1961 (during the era of two All-Star Games per season).
Relief Pioneer: Led the National League in saves three times (1958, 1962, 1963) and in games finished four times, retiring with 193 career saves.
