Signed as a highly touted “bonus baby” by the Chicago White Sox in 1950, Jay White “J.W.” Porter was a versatile catcher, outfielder, and first baseman who played six Major League seasons (1952, 1954–1958) across five franchises.

Known as one of the most prolific high school stars in California history—having led his Oakland Post 5 American Legion team to back-to-back national championships—Porter broke into the big leagues at age 19 before serving as a dependable right-handed utility weapon for the Browns, Tigers, Indians, Senators, and Cardinals.

Porter’s career combined legendary amateur fanfare with a steady utility career in the majors.

$67,500 “Bonus Baby” Signing: In 1950, Porter landed one of the largest signing bonuses of his era when Frank Lane’s Chicago White Sox signed him out of Oakland Technical High School.

St. Louis Browns Debut: Traded to the Browns before appearing in a regular-season game for Chicago, Porter debuted as a teenager in 1952, collecting 18 hits in 37 games.

1955 Detroit Tigers Campaign: Enjoyed his most productive Major League season in Detroit in 1955, appearing in 62 games as a catcher and outfielder while hitting .250 with 5 home runs and 22 RBIs.

Post-Baseball Character: After retiring from baseball, Porter enjoyed a colorful post-playing career in Jupiter, Florida, becoming a beloved local golf course starter known for his sharp wit and baseball storytelling.
