Signed as an amateur free agent by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, Donald “Tiger” Hoak was an aggressive, fiery third baseman known for his hard-nosed play and stellar defense across an 11-year Major League career (1954–1964).
Hoak anchored third base for two World Series champion teams—the iconic 1955 “Boys of Summer” Brooklyn Dodgers and the 1960 “Beat ’em Bucs” Pittsburgh Pirates—earning a reputation as a fierce competitor and on-field leader.
Hoak’s career was highlighted by key contributions to historic franchises and an iconic rule-book incident.
1955 World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers: Served as Brooklyn’s primary starting third baseman, playing in 115 games during the regular season and starting in Game 7 of the 1955 World Series when the Dodgers captured their first-ever World Championship.
1957 All-Star & Strikeout Record: After moving to the Cincinnati Redlegs, Hoak produced a career year in 1957, batting .293 with 19 home runs, 89 RBIs, and a league-leading 39 doubles, earning his lone All-Star selection. In a famous May 1957 game, he struck out six times in a 17-inning contest against the Phillies, establishing a long-standing record.
1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Championship: Traded to Pittsburgh prior to 1960, Hoak was the emotional spark plug at third base for the World Champion Pirates. He hit .282 with 16 HRs, 79 RBIs, and a .362 OBP, finishing 2nd in NL MVP voting behind teammate Dick Groat.
