Mitch Williams, nicknamed “Wild Thing,” was a left-handed relief pitcher whose 11-season Major League career (1986–1997) was defined by high-velocity fastballs, significant control issues, and a chaotic, high-effort pitching motion.
Williams earned his nickname early in his career with the Texas Rangers. His delivery was so violent that he often fell toward the third-base side of the mound, leaving him in no position to field. This, combined with his frequent walks and wild pitches, drew comparisons to the character Rick Vaughn from the 1989 film Major League. In 1993, he began wearing number 99, the same number worn by the fictional “Wild Thing.”
Teammates described his approach as pitching like his “hair’s on fire.” He relied almost exclusively on two versions of his high-90s fastball.
- 1989 All-Star: While playing for the Chicago Cubs, he saved 36 games and earned his only All-Star selection.
- The 1993 Peak: With the Philadelphia Phillies, he recorded a career-high 43 saves during the regular season and was instrumental in their NLCS victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Williams is most famously remembered for the final pitch of the 1993 World Series. In Game 6, with the Phillies leading 6-5 in the bottom of the 9th, Williams faced Toronto’s Joe Carter. Carter hit a three-run walk-off home run, giving the Blue Jays the championship.
Following the 1993 season, Williams was traded to the Houston Astros. His performance declined, and he spent brief stints with the California Angels and Kansas City Royals before retiring in 1997.
After his playing days, he transitioned into broadcasting, serving as a prominent studio analyst for the MLB Network from 2009 to 2014, where he was known for his blunt, honest opinions on the game.
