George Howard Brett is unequivocally one of the greatest third basemen and pure hitters in baseball history. He spent his entire 21-year Major League Baseball career (1973-1993) with the Kansas City Royals. He’s one of the only players in MLB history to collect 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and a career batting average over .300 (joining Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays).

The 1980 season is legendary for Brett. He made a serious run at hitting .400, a mark not achieved since Ted Williams in 1941. His batting average hovered above .400 as late as September 19th before he finished the season at a remarkable .390, the highest single-season average in the American League since 1941. This performance earned him the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award unanimously.

Brett led the Royals to their first World Series championship in 1985, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a 13-time All-Star (1976-1988) and won three Silver Slugger Awards (1980, 1985, 1988). While known more for his offense, he was a solid third baseman, winning a Gold Glove Award in 1985. Brett won three American League batting titles (1976, 1980, 1990), a rare accomplishment for a power hitter. His 1990 title came at age 37, making him the oldest player to win a batting title at the time.

After retiring in 1993, George Brett has remained an integral part of the Kansas City Royals organization, serving in various roles, including vice president of baseball operations. He is widely considered the greatest player in Royals franchise history.

George Brett was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 on his first ballot, receiving an overwhelming 98.2% of the votes, one of the highest percentages in history. The Kansas City Royals retired his uniform No. 5 in 1994, and a statue of him stands outside Kauffman Stadium.

George Brett’s most iconic and valuable rookie card is this 1975 Topps #228. This card is part of the distinctive 1975 Topps set. It features a solo image of Brett in his Kansas City Royals uniform.
