Stephen Wayne “Steve” Yeager was a professional baseball catcher known for his excellent defense, strong arm, and clutch hitting, particularly in the postseason. He spent the vast majority of his 15-season Major League Baseball career (1972-1986) with the Los Angeles Dodgers, becoming an integral part of their success in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Yeager made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in August 1972. He was highly regarded for his catching abilities. Yeager had an excellent arm, was adept at handling pitching staffs, and was known for his quick reflexes behind the plate.

In a frightening incident in 1976, Yeager suffered a severe throat injury when a shattered bat hit him while he was in the on-deck circle. This incident famously led to the development and widespread adoption of the throat protector that is now standard on all catcher’s masks.

Yeager was a key member of several Dodgers teams that reached the World Series in the 1970s, playing in the Fall Classic in 1974, 1977, and 1978. While they didn’t win those early appearances, his experience in high-pressure situations proved invaluable. Steve Yeager’s most celebrated achievement came in the 1981 World Series. The Dodgers, after falling behind the New York Yankees 2-0, rallied to win four straight games and claim the championship. In a somewhat unexpected turn, Yeager was named co-MVP of the World Series along with teammates Ron Cey and Pedro Guerrero. He played his final season in 1986 with the Seattle Mariners.

After retiring as a player, Yeager remained involved in baseball as a coach, including a stint as the catching coach for the Dodgers from 2012 to 2018. He also gained some fame for his acting roles, most notably playing a coach in the popular Major League film trilogy.

Steve Yeager’s most recognized rookie card is this 1973 Topps #59. This card features Yeager as a catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and is part of the clean, vertical-design 1973 Topps set.
