Bobby Bonds was a highly dynamic and impactful Major League Baseball player known for his rare combination of speed and power. He played in the big leagues for 14 seasons, from 1968 to 1981.
Bonds was exceptional in his ability to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season. He accomplished this feat a remarkable five times, a record he shares with his son, Barry Bonds. Along with his son Barry, Bobby Bonds is one of only two players to hit over 300 home runs (332) and steal over 400 bases (461) in a career. He earned three Gold Glove Awards as a right fielder (1971, 1973–74). Bonds was selected to the All-Star team three times (1971, 1973, and 1975), winning the All-Star MVP award in 1973.
Bobby Bonds played for several teams during his career: San Francisco Giants (1968–1974), New York Yankees (1975), California Angels (1976–1977), Chicago White Sox (1978), Texas Rangers (1978), Cleveland Indians (1979), St. Louis Cardinals (1980) and Chicago Cubs (1981).
While celebrated for his athletic gifts, Bonds was also known for a high strikeout rate, setting major league records for strikeouts in a single season (187 in 1969, broken by his own 189 in 1970). Despite this, his overall impact and unique blend of skills made him one of the most exciting players of his era. He was often compared to Willie Mays early in his career due to their shared talent and the fact they were teammates on the Giants.
