George “Shotgun” Shuba (1924–2014) was a highly respected outfielder and legendary pinch-hitter for the immortal 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers. Though he was primarily a utility player and bench weapon, his smooth, disciplined swing—meticulously crafted by swinging a lead-weighted bat at a knotted string in his basement 600 times a day—made him a feared hitter of line-drive “buckshot”.
The “Handshake for the Century” (April 18, 1946): While playing for the Triple-A Montreal Royals, Shuba was the next batter up when teammate Jackie Robinson hit his historic first minor league home run. As Robinson crossed home plate, Shuba stepped forward to shake his hand. In an era of intense racial hostility, this simple, public show of respect was captured in an iconic photograph. It is celebrated as the first interracial handshake in modern professional baseball history.
A “Boys of Summer” Icon: Shuba was a key member of the famous “Boys of Summer” Brooklyn Dodgers teams. He was immortalized in Roger Kahn’s classic 1972 book, which dedicated an entire chapter to him.
World Series History (1953): In Game 1 of the 1953 World Series, Shuba became the first National League player in MLB history to hit a pinch-hit home run in a World Series game, tagging New York Yankees star Allie Reynolds for a two-run shot.
1955 Championship: Shuba went on to win a World Series ring with the historic 1955 Dodgers—the only championship the franchise would ever win while playing in Brooklyn.
