Ryne Duren was an American professional baseball relief pitcher who played for ten seasons in Major League Baseball. He is best remembered for his time with the New York Yankees from 1958 to 1961 and for his intimidating presence on the mound.
Duren was known for his blazing fastball and a reputation for wildness. The combination of his poor vision, thick eyeglasses, and high-velocity pitches made him a feared figure among opposing batters. He was known to enhance this fear by intentionally throwing wildly during his warmups.
His career took off after being traded to the Yankees in 1957. He became a star relief pitcher, earning three All-Star selections (1958, 1959, 1961) and helping the team win the 1958 World Series. Over his career, Duren had a record of 27–44 with a 3.83 ERA, 630 strikeouts, and 57 saves.
After his baseball career, Duren became an advocate for addiction recovery, focusing on education and helping others. He wrote two books about his journey and helped establish programs dedicated to helping people with alcoholism. In 1983, he was presented with the Yankee Family Award for his efforts in this area.
