Orlando Cepeda was a Hall of Fame first baseman known for his powerful bat, charismatic presence, and role as a pioneer for Latin American players. Known as “Peruchín” and “the Baby Bull,” he was a dominant force in the National League throughout the 1960s.
Cepeda made an immediate impact, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1958 after hitting .312 with 25 home runs. He was a cornerstone of the Giants’ lineup during their early years in San Francisco and helped them win the NL pennant in 1962.
A mid-season trade to the Cardinals in 1966 revitalized his career. In 1967, he had his best season, winning the NL Most Valuable Player award after leading the league with 111 RBIs and batting .325. That same year, he helped the Cardinals win the World Series. Over his 17-year career, Cepeda amassed 379 home runs, 1,365 RBIs, and a .297 batting average. He was an 11-time All-Star and won the first-ever Outstanding Designated Hitter Award in 1973 while playing for the Boston Red Sox.
After his career, Cepeda faced personal struggles, including a conviction for drug smuggling. However, he eventually turned his life around, becoming a goodwill ambassador for the San Francisco Giants. In this role, he worked with at-risk youth and served as a bridge between the team and the Latino community.
In 1999, after a long wait, Orlando Cepeda was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee, solidifying his place among the game’s greats. His number, 30, has been retired by the San Francisco Giants.
