Vada Pinson was an American professional baseball player and coach who had a long and productive career in Major League Baseball. He was known for his combination of speed, power, and strong defensive skills.
Pinson played for 18 seasons (1958-1975) for five different teams. He is most notable for his 11 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (1958-1968), but also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, California Angels, and Kansas City Royals.
In 1959, his first full season, Pinson led the National League in at-bats, runs, and doubles and was named an All-Star. His 1961 season was particularly strong, as he hit .343, led the league with 208 hits, and won a Gold Glove Award. He finished third in the NL MVP voting that year.
After retiring as a player, Pinson remained in the game as a coach. He coached for several teams, including the Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Florida Marlins. He was a member of the inaugural coaching staffs for two expansion teams, the Mariners in 1977 and the Marlins in 1993.
Vada Pinson was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1977.
