Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Robert Lane “Bob” Miller was a durable, heavily traveled right-handed relief workhorse who pitched 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (1957–1974).
Famous for being part of an amusing trivia quirk—playing on the 1962 expansion New York Mets team that famously featured two pitchers named Bob Miller (requiring manager Casey Stengel to call the other one “Nelson” to avoid confusion)—Miller played for a record-tying 9 different major league franchises. Over 694 career games, he compiled a 69–81 record, a 3.37 ERA, 52 saves, and 895 strikeouts across 1,551.1 innings pitched, earning a reputation as a trusted late-inning bullpen anchor.
Miller carved out an incredible 17-year career by mastering the multi-inning relief role and stepping up on baseball’s biggest stages.
Three World Series Rings: Earned championship rings with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1963, 1965) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1971), pitching in the Fall Classic across multiple decades (1965, 1966, and 1971).
NL Games Pitched Leader (1964): Led the National League in appearances out of the Los Angeles bullpen, firing a career-high 74 games and 137.0 innings with a stingy 2.63 ERA.
Dodgers Dynasty Bullpen Core: Served as a vital bridge in Walter Alston’s pitching staff alongside Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax during Los Angeles’ dominant 1960s pennant runs.

Did You Know? Miller enjoyed stellar relief campaigns well into his thirties, posting a brilliant 1.43 ERA across 38 appearances for the San Diego Padres in 1971 before being reacquired by Pittsburgh to help capture the ’71 World Title.
