Selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 8th round of the 1971 MLB Draft out of Florida State University, Ray Mac “Mac” Scarce was a left-handed relief pitcher who served as a high-leverage bullpen arm during the early-to-mid 1970s.
Known for his deceptive delivery and tight slider out of the pen, Scarce pitched across five Major League seasons (1972–1976) with the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and Minnesota Twins.
Scarce worked his way through the Phillies’ minor league system quickly, making his big-league debut in 1972 before establishing himself in Philadelphia’s bullpen.
1973 Workhorse Campaign: Enjoyed his best overall season in 1973 as the Phillies’ primary left-handed relief specialist, appearing in 52 games and posting a 1–2 record with 4 saves, a 3.75 ERA, and 56 strikeouts across 60.0 innings.
Lefty Specialist Role: Displayed strong splits against left-handed hitters, earning tough late-inning assignments against National League sluggers throughout the 1972 and 1973 seasons.
New York Mets Transition: Traded to the New York Mets in 1974, providing left-handed bullpen depth alongside Tug McGraw before concluding his major league tenure with the Minnesota Twins in 1976.
