Manufacturer: Topps
Set Size: Base Set: 792 Cards   |  Traded Set: 132 Cards
Card Size: 2-1/2” x 3-1/2”

Set Notes: In 1991 Topps celebrated their 40th anniversary. Unfortunately this set while showcasing some great player photos, was over produced like most sets in this time period and the cards remain low in value. However some of the games most well known player rookie cards from the 1990s are apart of this set. The front of the cards feature a large player photo, Topps 40th anniversary logo, team logo on a pendent design and player name at bottom within a lined color stripe. Backs are printed with red and blue ink, and showcase player stats, card number and information.

Overview of 1991 Topps Baseball Cards

Design: The 1991 Topps set features a clean, classic design with player photos framed by a team-color border and the player’s name and team at the bottom. It continued Topps’ long-standing tradition as the premier baseball card manufacturer.

Key Rookie Card: The most notable rookie card in the main 1991 Topps set is Chipper Jones #333. As a future Hall of Famer and a perennial fan favorite, his rookie card from this set is highly desirable, especially in top graded condition, despite the high print run. The 1991 Topps Traded set is arguably more significant for its rookie cards than the base set. It features rookie cards of several future Hall of Famers and prominent players, including: Jeff Bagwell #4T, Iván Rodríguez #101T and Luis Gonzalez #48T.

Overall Value: Due to the extensive production of baseball cards in the early 1990s, most individual cards from the 1991 Topps hold very little value today. Complete sets are also relatively inexpensive. However, gem-mint (PSA 10) examples of some of the rookies can still fetch a significant price.

1991 Topps Traded Baseball Cards: The Topps Traded set was released later in the year, designed to capture players who were traded mid-season or prospects who made their MLB debuts after the main set was printed. This allowed collectors to keep their sets “current”.

Tiffany Parallel: Both the 1991 Topps base set and the 1991 Topps Traded set had a rarer “Tiffany” parallel version. These sets were factory-produced, had a higher gloss finish, and were printed in much lower quantities than the standard cards, making them considerably more valuable. A 1991 Topps Traded Tiffany Jeff Bagwell or Iván Rodríguez rookie in high grade is a very desirable card. We do not show values for the Tiffany parallels at this time. Read more about Tiffany cards here.

(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)

1991 Topps Desert Shield Parallel: These are baseball cards that are identical to the regular 1991 Topps base set, with one crucial difference, they have a gold foil “Operation Desert Shield” logo on the front of the card. These cards were never sold in retail stores. They were specially produced by Topps and distributed exclusively to U.S. troops serving overseas during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm (the Gulf War) in the Middle East. This limited and specialized distribution makes them significantly rarer and thus more valuable than their regular 1991 Topps counterparts, especially the Chipper Jones rookie card. Due to their rarity and the presence of key rookies, these cards are highly counterfeited, so collectors need to be vigilant when purchasing them.
