Hammonds was a standout at Stanford University, where he was the 1990 NCAA Freshman of the Year. He was selected 4th overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1992 MLB Draft and made his debut the following year.

- Peak Season (2000): His lone All-Star season came with the Rockies, where he hit a massive .335 with 20 HR and 106 RBI.
Before his pro debut, Hammonds was a key member of the US Olympic Baseball team in Barcelona.
On May 19, 1999, while playing for the Reds, he famously hit three home runs in a single game against the Rockies (the team he would join a year later).
Following his career year in Colorado, he signed a then-massive three-year, $21 million deal with Milwaukee. Unfortunately, shoulder injuries limited his impact during those years.
After retiring in 2005, Hammonds stayed close to the game. He worked as a scout for the San Diego Padres and later moved into a leadership role with the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), where he has focused on player programs and development.
