Jason Varitek, nicknamed “Tek,” is a former professional baseball catcher who played his entire 15-year career with the Boston Red Sox. A switch-hitter known for his leadership and defensive skills, he was an integral part of the Red Sox teams that won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, breaking the franchise’s 86-year championship drought.
Varitek was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 1994 MLB Draft, but was traded to the Red Sox organization in 1997. He made his major league debut later that year and became the team’s primary catcher in 1998. In 2004, he was named the fourth captain in Red Sox history, an honor previously held by legends like Jimmie Foxx and Carl Yastrzemski.
Over his career, Varitek earned numerous accolades, including: Three-time All-Star (2003, 2005, 2008), two-time World Series champion (2004, 2007), Gold Glove Award (2005) and Silver Slugger Award (2005).
After retiring as a player in 2011, Varitek was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2016. He has remained with the organization in a coaching role.
