Drafted by the Twins in the 10th round of the 1989 draft, Cordova spent several years developing in the minors before making a massive splash upon his arrival in the big leagues.
Cordova made his Major League debut in 1995 and immediately became the focal point of the Twins’ offense. Stepping into a lineup that was transitioning past its 1991 championship core, Cordova put together a spectacular debut season.
- The Numbers: He batted .277 with 24 home runs, 29 doubles, and 84 RBIs, while also showcasing some speed with 20 stolen bases.
- The Hardware: His powerful debut earned him the 1995 AL Rookie of the Year Award, narrowly defeating runners-up Garret Anderson and Andy Pettitte.
He followed up his rookie campaign with an even more productive sophomore year in 1996, hitting .309 with 111 RBIs and a career-high 46 doubles, cementing himself alongside Chuck Knoblauch and Kirby Puckett as a fan favorite in the Metrodome.
While injuries and the structural struggles of the late-90s Twins eventually slowed his initial MVP-caliber trajectory, Cordova remained a highly productive bat.
After five seasons in Minnesota, he transitioned to a reliable veteran presence across several franchises including the Toronto Blue Jays & Cleveland (2000–2001) and Baltimore Orioles (2002–2003).
Cordova retired after the 2003 season with 1,012 career hits, 122 home runs, and a lifetime .274 batting average.
