Signed by the Montreal Expos as an amateur free agent out of Puerto Rico in 1989, Yamil Benitez steadily built a reputation as a pure pull-hitter with immense strength.
He truly put himself on the national radar during his 1994 campaign at Double-A Harrisburg, where he blasted 27 home runs and drove in 87 runs. That breakout performance earned him a September call-up to Montreal, making his Major League debut on September 16, 1995.
Because the Expos’ outfield was notoriously crowded in the mid-90s with stars like Vladimir Guerrero, Moisés Alou, and Rondell White, Benítez found it difficult to lock down regular plate appearances. Despite limited time, he still showcased his carrying tool: of his first 18 major league hits across 1995 and 1996, 5 went over the wall.
His career took a major turn ahead of the 1997 season when he was traded to the Kansas City Royals. In Kansas City, he received his most extended look in the majors. Playing in 51 games for the Royals, Benítez launched 7 home runs in just 143 at-bats, highlighting a streak where his power could carry a lineup.
His raw power profile made him an attractive target for the newly formed Arizona Diamondbacks, who selected him late in the 1997 Expansion Draft. He suited up for Arizona during their historic inaugural 1998 season, appearing in 14 games and hitting the final two home runs of his Major League career.
Benítez finished his Major League career with 12 home runs, 29 RBIs, and a .213 batting average across 81 games.
