Pat Burrell, affectionately known as “Pat the Bat,” provided consistent power and a middle-of-the-order presence for over a decade, most notably as a cornerstone for the Philadelphia Phillies. Selected first overall in the 1998 MLB Draft, Burrell carried immense expectations and largely fulfilled them as a premier run-producer.
Burrell debuted in 2000 and immediately finished fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. He hit his stride in 2002, blasting 37 home runs and driving in 116 runs. Throughout his nine seasons in Philadelphia, he reached the 20-home run mark eight times and the 30-home run mark four times.
His Phillies tenure culminated in the 2008 World Series. While he struggled for much of the series, he delivered a massive lead-off double in the seventh inning of the clinching Game 5. That hit led to the winning run, securing Philadelphia’s first championship in 28 years and cementing Burrell’s legacy as a franchise icon.
After a stint with the Tampa Bay Rays, Burrell signed with the San Francisco Giants mid-way through the 2010 season. This move revitalized both his career and the Giants’ offense:
- The “Pat the Bat” Effect: He hit 18 home runs in just 96 games for San Francisco, providing the veteran power necessary for their postseason push.
- 2010 World Series: He earned his second championship ring, playing left field for a Giants team that captured the first of three titles in five years.
- Retirement: He finished his career with the Giants in 2011, officially retiring as a Phillie after signing a one-day contract in 2012.
Known for his towering home runs and his calm, stoic demeanor, Burrell remains a deeply popular figure in Philadelphia. The Phillies inducted him into the Wall of Fame in 2015.
