Edwin Encarnación established himself as one of the most prolific and feared power hitters of his generation, blending terrifying bat speed with an iconic home run celebration. Over 16 Major League seasons, he launched 424 home runs and earned three All-Star selections, transforming from a raw young infielder into an elite middle-of-the-order force.

The Texas Rangers originally drafted Encarnación in 2000, but a trade soon sent him to the Cincinnati Reds. He debuted in 2005 and spent several seasons handling third base. While he flashed raw power, hitting 26 home runs in 2008, defensive struggles and inconsistency capped his early ceiling. In mid-2009, Cincinnati packaged him in a trade to the Toronto Blue Jays, a transaction that altered the trajectory of his career.

Encarnación truly unlocked his potential in Toronto. He refined his hitting mechanics, developed exceptional plate discipline, and transitioned primarily to first base and designated hitter.

His massive breakout occurred in 2012, initiating an elite stretch of offensive dominance:

  • The 2012 Explosion: He crushed 42 home runs and drove in 110 runs, finishing fourth in the AL MVP voting.
  • “The Edwing”: He popularized his signature home run trot—rounding the bases with his right arm crooked outward like an airplane wing—which became a staple of Toronto baseball folklore.
  • Run Producer: He led the American League with 127 RBIs in 2016 and authored one of the biggest hits in franchise history: a walk-off, three-run home run in the 11th inning of the 2016 AL Wild Card Game against the Orioles.

He walked away from the game as a beloved teammate and one of the defining symbols of the high-octane Blue Jays offenses of the mid-2010s.
