George Robert “Birdie” Tebbetts (1912–1999) was a prominent figure in baseball for over five decades, known for a 14-year playing career as a durable catcher, followed by 11 seasons as a Major League manager.
Tebbetts was considered one of the top defensive catchers in the American League during the 1940s and early 1950s. He played for the following teams, Detroit Tigers (1936–1942, 1946–1947), Boston Red Sox (1947–1950), Cleveland Indians (1951–1952). His career was interrupted for three seasons (1943–1945) while he served as a captain in the Army Air Forces during World War II, playing for military baseball teams.
He was a four-time American League All-Star (1941, 1942, 1948, 1949). Tibbetts played in the 1940 World Series with the Detroit Tigers.
In 1956, he led the Cincinnati Redlegs as manager to a surprising third-place finish and was voted Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
