Signed by the Boston Braves as an amateur free agent in 1947, John “Johnny” Logan was a fiery, hard-nosed shortstop and the emotional heart of the Milwaukee Braves teams during the mid-to-late 1950s.
Known for his fierce competitive edge and dependable middle-infield defense, Logan spent 13 seasons in the Major Leagues (1951–1963). He formed one of the era’s premier double-play duos with Hall of Fame second baseman Red Schoendienst, anchoring the dirt for back-to-back National League pennant winners (1957, 1958) and the 1957 World Series championship squad.
Logan was a four-time NL All-Star who brought toughness and clutch hitting to the Braves’ legendary core alongside Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews.
1955 NL Doubles Leader: Turned in his finest individual season, batting .297 with 13 home runs and 83 RBIs, while leading the National League with 37 doubles and finishing 11th in NL MVP voting.
1957 World Series Title: Batted near the top of the lineup and provided crucial defense during Milwaukee’s 7-game World Series victory over the New York Yankees. He launched the first home run of the series for Milwaukee in a Game 2 win and set a World Series single-game record with 10 assists at shortstop.
All-Star Consistency: Named an NL All-Star in 1955, 1957, 1958, and 1959.
Later Career: Finished his big-league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before becoming one of the early American stars to play in Japan, winning a Japan Series with the Nankai Hawks in 1964.
