Signed by the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1958 as an 18-year-old “bonus baby,” Richard Wade “Dick” Ellsworth was a durable, smooth-throwing left-handed starting pitcher who spent 13 seasons in Major League Baseball (1958, 1960–1971).
Best remembered as the left-handed anchor of the Chicago Cubs’ rotation throughout the 1960s, Ellsworth compiled 115 career wins, 1,140 strikeouts, 84 complete games, and 16 shutouts across 2,155.2 innings pitched for the Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, Indians, and Brewers.
Ellsworth’s career was headlined by one of the most remarkable single-season turnarounds in Chicago baseball history.
1963 Masterclass Campaign: Coming off a league-high 20 losses in 1962, Ellsworth completely reinvented his approach and turned in an all-time great season for Chicago. He went 22–10 with a sparkling 2.11 ERA over 290.2 innings pitched, tossing 22 complete games and 4 shutouts.
1963 All-Star & Cy Young Contention: Earned his first NL All-Star selection in 1963 and finished 2nd in NL Cy Young Award voting (behind only Sandy Koufax’s unanimous MVP/Cy Young season) while finishing 19th in NL MVP voting.
Workhorse Consistency: Logged 200+ innings in four different seasons for Chicago (1962, 1963, 1964, 1966), twice winning 15 or more games for the Cubs.
1968 Boston Red Sox Stint: Traded to Boston, Ellsworth enjoyed a late-career resurgence in 1968, going 16–10 with a 3.03 ERA across 33 starts and 222.2 innings for the Red Sox.
