Signed as an amateur free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 1955 out of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, José Antonio Pagán was a versatile, sure-handed infielder and clutch postseason contributor who played 15 Big League seasons (1959–1973) with the Giants, Pirates, and Phillies.

Best remembered as the primary starting shortstop for the National League Champion 1962 San Francisco Giants and a key veteran utility infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates during their late-1960s and early-1970s contention window, Pagán compiled 922 career hits, 52 home runs, and 372 RBIs across 1,342 games.

Pagán built a reputation as a steadying presence in the infield and a big-game hitter under pressure.

1971 World Series Climax (Game 7): Etched his name into Pittsburgh Pirates lore during Game 7 of the 1971 Fall Classic against the Baltimore Orioles. Clinging to a 1–0 lead in the top of the 8th inning, Pagán ripped an RBI double off Mike Cuellar to drive in Willie Stargell. That insurance run proved to be the World Series–clinching run in Pittsburgh’s 2–1 victory.

Super-Utility Impact in Pittsburgh: After joining the Pirates in 1965, Pagán filled vital roles across third base, shortstop, and second base, highlighted by a stellar 1969 season where he hit .285 with 9 home runs and 42 RBIs in 108 games.
