Ronald Charles “Ron” Cey, famously nicknamed “The Penguin” for his distinctive waddling running gait, was a highly productive and durable third baseman who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (1971-1987). He is best known for his long and successful tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his pivotal role in their 1981 World Series championship.
Cey was a crucial component of the legendary Los Angeles Dodgers infield of the 1970s, which also included first baseman Steve Garvey, second baseman Davey Lopes, and shortstop Bill Russell. This quartet played together for an incredible 8 1/2 seasons. Cey was selected to the National League All-Star team six consecutive times from 1974 to 1979.
He was an integral part of the Dodgers team that won the 1981 World Series against the New York Yankees. In that series, Cey batted .350 with a home run and six RBIs. In a memorable moment from Game 5, he was hit in the head by a wild fastball from Goose Gossage but returned for the clinching Game 6. Cey was named co-MVP of the World Series along with teammates Steve Yeager and Pedro Guerrero.
After the 1982 season, Cey was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He continued to be a productive power hitter and veteran presence for the Cubs, helping them win the National League East Division title in 1984. He finished his career with a brief stint as a part-time player for the Oakland Athletics in 1987.
After retiring, Ron Cey has remained involved with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in various capacities, often making appearances on the team’s behalf.
Ron Cey’s most recognized rookie card is this 1972 Topps #761. This card is part of the distinctively designed 1972 Topps set, known for its bold, “psychedelic tombstone” borders. It’s a multi-player “Rookie Stars” card, featuring Cey (with the Los Angeles Dodgers) alongside Ben Oglivie and Bernie Williams.
