Roger Maris is a legendary figure in baseball history, best known for his dramatic pursuit and breaking of Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record in 1961. However, his career was also marked by two MVP awards, multiple World Series championships, and a contentious relationship with the media and fans.

Roger Maris played for 12 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily for the New York Yankees. He was a two-time American League MVP, a seven-time All-Star, and a three-time World Series champion.

Maris began his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1957 and was traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1958. He was then famously traded to the Yankees before the 1960 season, a move that would change his life.

In his first season with the Yankees (1960), Maris led the league in RBIs and won his first MVP award. The following year, his numbers reached historic heights. While his home run record is his most famous achievement, Maris was an excellent all-around player. He won a Gold Glove Award in 1960 and was a consistent run producer, leading the league in RBIs twice.

With the American League having expanded its schedule to 162 games, he and his teammate, the beloved Mickey Mantle, embarked on a quest to break Babe Ruth’s long-standing record of 60 home runs in a single season. The media dubbed them “the M&M Boys.” The public and press largely rooted for Mantle, a charismatic star, and treated Maris as an outsider.

Commissioner Ford Frick declared that if the new record was not set within the first 154 games (the length of Ruth’s season), it would be recorded with an “asterisk.” On October 1, 1961, the final game of the season, Maris hit his 61st home run surpassing Ruth’s mark.

The asterisk was officially removed in 1991, and Maris held the all-time single-season home run record until it was broken by Mark McGwire in 1998. However, his total of 61 still stands as the American League record.

The Yankees honored Maris by retiring his uniform number 9 and erecting a monument to him in Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park in 1984.
