Norman Dalton “Norm” Cash was a Major League Baseball first baseman who spent the vast majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers. Known by the nickname “Stormin’ Norman” for his powerful hitting and fiery demeanor, he was a five-time All-Star and a key member of the Tigers’ 1968 World Series championship team.
Cash played 17 seasons in the majors, from 1958 to 1974. He finished with a career .271 batting average, 377 home runs, and 1,104 RBIs. When he retired, his home run total ranked fourth all-time among American League left-handed hitters.
After a brief stint with the Chicago White Sox, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1960. He would spend the rest of his career with the Tigers, becoming a fan favorite and one of the franchise’s all-time greats. In 1968, Cash was instrumental in the Tigers’ World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. He led the team with a .385 batting average in the series.
The 1961 season was a significant outlier in Cash’s career. It was the only year he hit above .290, and he never approached the same batting average or on-base percentage again. This disparity led to widespread speculation about the use of a corked bat, which Cash himself later hinted at.
Beyond his numbers, Cash was known for his colorful personality and humor. He was a popular figure with teammates and fans, often engaging in comical antics on and off the field.
