Jim Perry was a professional baseball pitcher who had a 17-year career in Major League Baseball from 1959 to 1975. He played for four teams: the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, and Oakland Athletics. A three-time All-Star, he is best known for winning the Cy Young Award in 1970.
He made his debut with the Indians in 1959 and finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting. In 1960, he led the American League with 18 wins. He later returned to Cleveland for the final two seasons of his career.
Perry spent the longest and most successful part of his career with the Minnesota Twins. He was a member of the team that won the American League Championship in 1965 and played in the World Series. He had back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1969 and 1970, helping the Twins win two divisional titles. Perry’s career-defining season came in 1970 with the Minnesota Twins. He was awarded the American League Cy Young Award after leading the league with 24 wins, a 24-12 record, and a 3.03 ERA.
Over his career, Perry compiled a record of 215 wins and 174 losses, with a 3.45 earned run average (ERA) and 1,576 strikeouts. He was a starting pitcher for most of his career, with 447 starts and 109 complete games.
Jim Perry is a member of one of baseball’s most notable families, as he is the older brother of Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry.
