George “Sparky” Anderson was a Hall of Fame manager whose career spanned 26 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers. He is one of the most successful managers in baseball history, known for leading two different franchises to World Series championships.

Anderson’s playing career was brief, lasting only one season in 1959 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Anderson is widely recognized for his managerial accomplishments, which began in the minor leagues. He managed five different minor league clubs, winning league championships with two of them, before becoming a coach with the San Diego Padres in 1969. Anderson’s major league managing career began in 1970 with the Cincinnati Reds. He took over a talented but underachieving team and led them to five National League pennants and two consecutive World Series championships in 1975 and 1976. This period of dominance earned the team the nickname “The Big Red Machine.”

After being dismissed by the Reds in 1978, Anderson took over as the Tigers’ manager in 1979. He led the team for 17 seasons, and in 1984, he guided the Tigers to a World Series championship, making him the first manager to win a World Series in both the National and American Leagues. He was named the American League Manager of the Year in 1984 and again in 1987.

In 2000, Anderson was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Both the Cincinnati Reds (No. 10) and the Detroit Tigers (No. 11) have retired his jersey numbers in his honor.
