Bob Gibson, nicknamed “Hoot” and “Gibby,” was an iconic American baseball pitcher who played his entire 17-season career with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1959 to 1975.

Gibson is widely regarded as one of the greatest postseason pitchers in baseball history. In nine World Series starts, he had a record of 7-2 with a remarkable 1.89 ERA and 92 strikeouts. His performances in the 1964 and 1967 World Series were legendary, with him pitching three complete-game victories in the 1967 series alone.

Gibson’s 1968 season is arguably the greatest single pitching season of the modern era. He posted an unbelievable 1.12 ERA, along with a 22-9 record and 13 shutouts. His dominance was a major factor in Major League Baseball’s decision to lower the pitcher’s mound the following season to increase offense, a change often referred to as the “Gibson Rules.”

Beyond his pitching, Gibson was also a highly capable hitter, with a career batting average of .206, 24 home runs, and 144 RBIs. He was even occasionally used as a pinch-hitter and hit an impressive .303 in the 1970 season. He was the second player to win two World Series MVP awards.

Gibson finished his career with 251 wins, 174 losses, a 2.91 earned run average (ERA), and 3,117 strikeouts. He won the National League Cy Young Award twice (1968 and 1970). He was named the National League MVP in 1968. Gibson was also a nine-time Gold Glove Award winner, showcasing his exceptional fielding ability.

He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981, his first year of eligibility.
