James “Jim” Alton Coates was a professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball for parts of nine seasons from 1956 to 1967. A right-handed pitcher, he is most known for his time with the New York Yankees, where he was a key part of their dynasty in the early 1960s.

Coates had a career win-loss record of 43-22 with a 4.00 ERA and 396 strikeouts. He pitched for the New York Yankees (1956, 1959–62), Washington Senators (1963), Cincinnati Reds (1963), and Los Angeles/California Angels (1965–67). As a Yankee, he was especially effective, with a record of 37-15 and a 3.84 ERA. He was a two-time All-Star in 1960, a year in which the leagues played two All-Star games.

Coates was a two-time World Series champion, winning with the Yankees in 1961 and 1962. In the 1961 World Series, he pitched four scoreless innings in Game 4, earning a save and helping to preserve a shutout started by Whitey Ford.

Coates was a tall, skinny right-hander who threw sidearm. He was known by several nicknames, including “The Mummy,” which reportedly came from his habit of sleeping with his eyes open. He was also called “Rock” due to his fielding, and “Thermometer” due to his build.
