Selected 3rd overall in the 1968 MLB Draft out of East Tennessee State University by the San Francisco Giants, Ed Goodson was a powerful left-handed corner infielder and pinch-hitting specialist throughout the 1970s.
Best remembered for his stroke off the bench and positional flexibility at first and third base, Goodson played eight Major League seasons (1970, 1972–1977) with the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
After raking in the minor leagues—including a .340 MVP campaign in the Texas League in 1971—Goodson established himself as a valuable power bat in San Francisco and Atlanta.
1973 Peak Campaign: Delivered his finest overall season in 1973 with the Giants, hitting .302 with 12 home runs, 16 doubles, and 48 RBIs in 103 games while splitting time at third base and first base.
Clutch Pinch-Hitting Threat: Transitioned into one of the National League’s most dependable pinch hitters, frequently coming cold off the bench to deliver key run-producing hits.
1977 Dodgers Pennant Run: Joined the NL Champion Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977, serving as a key left-handed bench weapon behind Steve Garvey and Ron Cey during LA’s pennant-winning season.
