Sean Burroughs was the epitome of a homegrown baseball prodigy, capturing the spotlight at every level of the game. The son of 1974 American League MVP Jeff Burroughs, Sean was practically born into baseball royalty and went on to author one of the most legendary youth and amateur resumes in the history of the sport.

  • Little League World Series Dominance: He pitched Long Beach, California, to consecutive LLWS titles in 1992 and 1993.
  • Olympic Gold: After being drafted 9th overall by the San Diego Padres in 1998, he suited up for Team USA at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Under Tommy Lasorda, Burroughs hit .375, helping the U.S. capture its historic first-ever Olympic Gold Medal.
  • Top Prospect Hype: He won the MVP award at the 2000 All-Star Futures Game and spent three straight years (2000–2002) ranked in Baseball America’s top 10 prospects list alongside names like Josh Beckett and Mark Prior.

Burroughs broke into the majors with San Diego in 2002 and became the regular third baseman by 2003, batting a crisp .286. In 2004, he famously drove in the game-winning run in the very first game played at Petco Park.

While his contact skills were stellar (batting .298 in 2004), the massive over-the-fence power scouts anticipated never fully developed. Following a trade to Tampa Bay in 2006, Burroughs walked away from the game for several years while battling personal struggles and severe substance abuse.

His return to the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011 remains one of the era’s most inspiring comeback stories. He earned his way back to a big-league roster after four years completely out of organized ball, appearing in 78 games and helping the D-Backs secure an NL West division title. He finished his Major League career with the Minnesota Twins in 2012.
