Felipe Alou is a significant figure in baseball history, recognized for his long and successful career as both a player and a trailblazing manager. A prominent member of one of baseball’s most famous families, his contributions to the sport extend beyond his impressive statistics.
Felipe Alou’s playing career spanned 17 seasons from 1958 to 1974. A versatile outfielder and first baseman, he was a three-time All-Star known for his consistent hitting and ability to play all three outfield positions. He was the first Dominican-born player to achieve a full-time role in the major leagues. Over his career, Alou played for six teams, including the San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, and Oakland Athletics.
On September 15, 1963, Felipe made history with his younger brothers, Matty and Jesús, when they formed the first all-brother outfield in Major League history while playing for the San Francisco Giants.
Felipe Alou had his best years as a player with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves. In 1966, he led the National League in hits (218), runs (122), and at-bats (666) and finished second in the batting title race to his brother, Matty.
After retiring as a player, Alou seamlessly transitioned into a long and distinguished career as a manager and coach. Alou was promoted to manager of the Montreal Expos in May 1992. He led the team for nine seasons, becoming the most successful manager in franchise history. He returned to the San Francisco Giants organization, the team he started his playing career with, to become their manager in 2003. In his first season, he led the team to 100 wins and an NL West division title.
Notably his son, Moisés Alou, had a distinguished 17-year career as a six-time All-Star outfielder. Felipe also managed Moisés during their time with both the Montreal Expos and the San Francisco Giants.
