Sherman Raymond “Sherm” Lollar was the premier defensive backstop, anchoring force, and standard-bearer for elite catching in the American League throughout the 1950s.

During an era when the Junior Circuit boasted incredible catching depth with Yogi Berra in New York and Elston Howard emerging behind him, Lollar carved out a stellar reputation as an absolute master of pitching staff management. Renowned for his high baseball IQ, quick release, and unmatched ability to block the plate, he served as the defensive field general for the high-flying “Go-Go” Chicago White Sox. A perennial All-Star and multi-time Gold Glove winner, Lollar balanced his elite glovework with a highly productive bat, making him a cornerstone of Chicago baseball history.

After brief, early stints learning the ropes under the New York Yankees and St. Louis Browns, Lollar arrived in Chicago in 1952. He instantly became the steady, cerebral balance to a White Sox squad defined by chaotic speed, aggressive base-running, and elite pitching.

The Gold Glove Standard: Lollar was the definitive defensive standard for AL catchers at the end of the decade. He captured three consecutive Gold Glove Awards (1957–1959)—including the very first two Gold Gloves ever awarded to an American League catcher when the honor was established in 1957.

The Pitcher’s Dream: He possessed an uncanny ability to read opposing hitters, handling elite and erratic Chicago pitching aces like Billy Pierce, Early Wynn, and Virgil Trucks with equal aplomb.

Teams Played For: Cleveland Indians (1946), New York Yankees (1947–1948), St. Louis Browns (1949–1951), Chicago White Sox (1952–1963).

Career Totals: 1,752 games, 1,415 hits, 155 home runs, 808 RBIs, and a .264 lifetime batting average.

Accolades: 9-time AL All-Star, 3-time Gold Glove Winner, 1947 World Series Champion (with New York), 1959 AL Pennant Champion.

Did You Know?  Lollar’s steady leadership culminated in the magical 1959 season, when the White Sox finally broke the New York Yankees’ decade-long chokehold on the American League to capture the junior circuit pennant. While renowned for defense, Lollar provided critical middle-of-the-order pop for the 1959 “Go-Go” Sox, clouting a team-high 22 home runs and driving in 84 runs.

In the 1959 Fall Classic against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lollar was spectacular under the bright lights, batting a robust .292 (7-for-24) with a home run and five RBIs, anchoring the squad through a hard-fought six-game clash.
