David Russell “Gus” Bell (1928–1995) was a strong left-handed hitting outfielder who spent the majority and best part of his 15-season MLB career (1950–1964) as a star for the Cincinnati Redlegs/Reds. He was a consistent run producer and a popular player in Cincinnati.
Bell was part of a powerful Reds lineup in the 1950s alongside sluggers like Ted Kluszewski and later Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson. He was a four-time National League All-Star (1953, 1954, 1956, 1957) and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1964.
Gus Bell is notable for starting a rare and impressive three-generation baseball family. His son Buddy Bell, a five-time All-Star and six-time Gold Glove winner who also managed in the MLB. His grandsons David Bell (who hit for the cycle, making Gus and David the only grandfather-grandson duo to do so) and Mike Bell, both of whom played in the Majors.
